April 27thWendyStory inspired by a topical news item Eyjaflallajökull & the Mortal Woman
This poem refers to two news items which were topical in April: the eruption of Eyjaflallajökull which led to Britain and northern Europe being a no-fly zone for six days; and the London Marathon. The journey of the "mortal woman" is clearly suggested by that of Mara Yamauchi; but the details of the journey are not the same. The "mortal woman" represents everyone who got to London and took part in the Marathon, despite difficulties of travel.

Most of this poem came to me suddenly as I was getting lunch on the morning of Remembrance Sunday. The original poem was very bleak; but thoughts of the approaching season of Advent later suggested the last lines and give reason for hope.
